What services does Covenant House offer to youth facing homelessness?

Together, the Covenant House community is fighting to achieve a world where every young person has access to safe housing, support, healing, and opportunity. To learn more about all of the work we do for youth overcoming homelessness, click the link below. When young people age out of foster care and other child welfare services, they become susceptible to homelessness, human trafficking, and other threats to their well-being.

Bill’s passion for working with youth came from his parents, who have been foster parents for over 30 years and have adopted 8 of his 11 siblings through the child welfare system. We value authentic relationships, honor the voice of our youth, and model caring relationships based on trust, respect, and honesty. The reasons behind homelessness are multifaceted, and the most at-risk individuals within our communities are often the most vulnerable youths. As many as 4.2 million young people will experience a period of homelessness this year in the U.S. alone.

More Than 4 Million Young People Will Experience Homelessness This Year

As the largest provider of runaway and homeless youth services in New York City, CHNY serves over 1,600 young adult ages annually with an operating budget of over 30 million dollars. Our doors are open to all young people who need help, regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. We facilitate our services using trauma-informed principles to help homeless youth leave the streets and achieve independence. We also advocate for systemic change through public policy while promoting awareness of critical issues related to youth homelessness.

But certain risk factors can increase a young person’s chances of experiencing homelessness. Our strengths-based programs are designed to empower young people to rise and overcome adversity, today and in the future. Ritter resigned but was never charged with sexual abuse.[6] Soon after, more accusations surfaced. Four men came forward publicly claiming to have been in sexual relationships with Ritter for years, including multiple who stated the relationships started when they were minors receiving services through Covenant House.

Covenant House provides the stability and structure necessary to build a positive future. If you or someone you know is a runaway, homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless, call the National Runaway Safeline or visit their website. Throughout the late 1970s, Covenant House expanded its social service programs in New York City and began to branch out to other cities in 1980. And, we urge our partners, vendors, and supporters to make the same commitment.

A DAF is like a charitable savings account, giving you the flexibility to recommend how much and how often money is granted to Covenant House and other qualified charities. Use your donation to make an immediate impact or use your fund as a tool for future charitable gifts. Covenant House leads by example to demonstrate that caring relationships are based on love, trust, respect, and honesty. Carlette Mack started her career at Covenant House Alaska as an intern 25 years ago. She is a second-generation Covenant House employee; her mother worked at Covenant House Alaska as a case manager for 13 years.

True Colors Day

Carlette is a trained clinical therapist primarily focused on therapy with children and teens. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology and her master’s in counseling psychology, both, from Alaska Pacific University. Carlette is recognized for innovative program development and implementation, strategic planning, collaboration with local partners, and for her management and leadership skills. She has a strong sense of integrity and a passion for ensuring the well-being and quality of life of young people experiencing homelessness.

We are committed to providing unconditional love, absolute respect, and relentless support for each young person who walks through our doors. Your Support is the bridge from homelessness to hope – meeting basic needs such as housing, food, physical & mental health care! Your support also enables CHC to provide youth with life skills, career and education support – providing youth overcoming homelessness with the best chance for success in independence. We serve young people experiencing or at risk of homelessness or human trafficking with absolute respect and unconditional love. Our ultimate goal is to help each young person move on with their life in positive ways with counseling, education, stable employment, and secure housing.

We offer them a welcoming and safe environment based on absolute respect, unconditional love, and relentless support, where we believe in and encourage their resilience. Each year, millions of young people across the countries where we operate face a period of homelessness. Our services and programs help those youth overcome the harsh experience of being unhoused.

Carlette's passion and dedication for serving youth led her to positions such as Rights of Passage program coordinator, chief operating officer, and, at Covenant House Washington, director of external affairs. In 2017, Carlette served as interim executive director of Covenant House Illinois, helping to establish Covenant House’s then newest site, in Chicago. Prior to joining Covenant House International in February 2023, Bill served as the CEO of Covenant House California since 2014, leading the site to quadruple in size in those eight years.

Every year, more than 5,000 of these young people lose their lives to the streets. For changes to your donor account, there are many things you can do through our new self service Donor Portal! There you can see past donations, print receipts for your record, as well as update your payment information.

A report later prepared for Covenant House counted a total of 15 reported cases of sexual acts between Ritter and youth and young adults who were living or volunteering at the shelter. In the late 1960s, the Reverend Bruce Ritter, a Franciscan priest, retired from his job as a professor at Manhattan College to begin a new ministry serving the city's poor. Joined by colleague Father James Fitzgibbon, he moved into a dilapidated tenement building in New York City's East Village.

When you give to Covenant House, you make it possible for us to fight human trafficking and relentlessly support young people facing homelessness. There are many ways you can donate to help young people get back on their feet and onto their next chapters. Covenant House immediately meets the basic needs of youth experiencing homelessness through a nourishing meal, a shower, clean clothes, medical attention, and a safe place to sleep. In Hollywood, CHC’s Safe Haven shelter immediately provides for youths’ basic human needs and urgent medical care. Young people receive a nutritious meal, take a shower with new personal care products, receive new clothes, and sleep in a warm, safe bed. We acknowledge the bravery it takes for young people to walk through our doors.

Where STEM Curriculum Meets Career Readiness

pltw engineering design process

Students learn how these concepts apply to a career in aerospace engineering and other engineering fields. The knowledge and skills students acquire throughout PLTW Engineering come together in EDD as they identify an issue and then research, design, and test a solution, ultimately presenting their solution to a panel of engineers. Students apply the professional skills they have developed to document a design process to standards, completing EDD ready to take on any post-secondary program or career. Students are given the opportunity to combine mechanisms with input and output devices to automate the mechanisms. Construction and programming skills are layered, and projects and the problem provide students the opportunity to connect their learning throughout the lessons in the unit. Students take on the role of interns, and work in teams to identify design requirements and create prototypes to meet the needs of clients.

Years of PLTW's Introduction to Engineering Design

They solve real-world aviation and space challenges and plan a mission to Mars. To ensure that more middle school students have equal access and opportunities to engage and be empowered through the PLTW experience, we offer all PLTW Gateway units and teacher resources in both English and Spanish. PLTW Core Training immerses teachers in a hands-on, collaborative learning environment, challenges them to look at their classrooms in a new way, and empowers them to bring learning to life with PLTW. Physical computing projects will promote student awareness of interactive systems, including Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and broaden their understanding of abstract computer science concepts through meaningful and authentic applications. Students discover the design process and develop an understanding of the influence of creativity and innovation in their lives.

PLTW Gateway Pricing

They also explore robot systems through projects such as remotely operated vehicles. Students explore the physics of flight and space through software simulations and hands-on experiences. They bring concepts to life by designing and testing an airfoil, propulsion system, and a rocket.

In PLTW Engineering, students engage in open-ended problem solving, learn and apply the engineering design process, and use the same industry-leading technology and software as are used in the world’s top companies. Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software, and use an engineering notebook to document their work. This course propels students’ learning in the fundamentals of atmospheric and space flight. As they explore the physics of flight, students bring the concepts to life by designing an airfoil, propulsion system, and rockets.

Students will customize their experience by choosing a problem that interests them from the areas of health, environment, emergency preparedness, education, community service, and school culture. Because problems in the real world involve more than one discipline, the unit will introduce students to biomedical science concepts as they work on solutions for the specific problems they choose to tackle. Students engage in an open-ended research experience in the PLTW Capstone course, a culminating program for those completing PLTW's high school offerings. They collaborate in teams, designing and developing original solutions to well-defined and justified real-world problems. Students explore the foundations of computing by engaging in circuit design processes to create combinational logic and sequential logic (memory) as electrical engineers do in industry. Students discover and explore manufacturing processes, product design, robotics, and automation, and then they apply what they have learned to design solutions for real-world manufacturing problems.

In 1996, my boss at the time, Dick Blais, left the district to work on getting PLTW off the ground. He had put together a very powerful advisory council that met frequently and helped raise the initial funding for PLTW, which got its start in 1997. Students play the role of real-life medical detectives as they collect and analyze medical data to diagnose disease. They solve medical mysteries through hands-on projects and labs, measure and interpret vital signs, examine nervous system structure and function, and investigate disease outbreaks. Our programs are designed to empower students to thrive in an evolving world.

Many students have come back after college and thanked me for turning them on to a successful career in engineering. They will usually also bring up a favorite PLTW project from our class time together. Terry C. Nagy Jr. is a longtime teacher at Shenendehowa High School, located in the New York school district where the first PLTW courses were developed two decades ago.

People like to hear success stories, so use this data to show how you are impacting students with these partnerships. Most of the time, if your design includes all components of what you are looking for from your future partnership, it will have a greater chance for success. He has worked in Career and Technical Education (CTE) for 10 years, first as a teacher and now as an assistant principal working with Denver Public Schools. Bradley’s passion is promoting STEM programs and education to girls and students of color. After the training, the group decided to keep in close contact and met at least once a month to have everyone contribute what they and their PLTW students were picking up.

It worked great – we were able to keep in touch and share our experiences. In addition, there were several members of the group who took leadership roles and ended up being the first Master Teachers in IED. In the early ‘90s, before PLTW officially formed, teachers at my school taught early versions of IED, Principles of Engineering (POE), and Digital Electronics (DE).

Sign-up for a monthly donation of $26.53 or more to become a Youth Champion! Your monthly gift will provide shelter, meals, and vital programs that will help youth experiencing homelessness and trafficking. Lend your voice and advocate for the rights of youth facing homelessness and survivors of trafficking. Young people experiencing homelessness face complex stress and trauma in their everyday efforts to survive. We offer counseling, traditional talk therapy, and other wellness programs such as yoga, art and music therapy, religious and spiritual services, and physical fitness.

In these activities, young people heal from the harm done to them while living unhoused and take control of their lives, build on their strengths, and nourish their self-confidence. Bill began his career doing street outreach, residential care, and therapy in Chicago. We help young people transform their lives and put them on a path to independence. Your support provides immediate shelter and care that helps young people build on their strengths to overcome their experiences of homelessness and human trafficking.

About 50% of all unhoused youth were homeless for the first time in the past year. Covenant House fosters confidence; encouraging young people to believe in themselves and make informed choices for their lives. Bill has a bachelor's in business administration and finance from Taylor University and a master's of social work from Loyola University in Chicago. Bill lives in California with his wife and two children and he is an avid Philadelphia sports fan. Through relentless engagement we foster confidence and encourage them to believe in themselves and make informed choices about their lives.

Young people may also participate in our transitional housing program, Rights of Passage, our Supportive Apartments Program and Rapid-Rehousing. Despite having a board of directors, Covenant House's public face has tended to be its presidents. Father Bruce Ritter founded Covenant House and served as president from 1972 to his resignation in 1990.

Our housing program provides emergency shelter, short-term, transitional living, and permanent housing options to young people experiencing homelessness. We are expertly equipped to respond to the unique needs of young survivors of human trafficking, those who identify as LGBTQ+, and those who are pregnant or parenting solo. Your fundraising campaign raises critical funds that keep Covenant House's doors open for the thousands of young people who will come to us seeking shelter each year. The money you raise is put right to work, funding vital services like medical care, legal assistance, education opportunities, vocational training and therapeutic services. And the awareness raised through your advocacy shines a much needed light on the youth homelessness crisis. We are steadfast in our commitment to building a present and future of safety, healing, housing, and opportunity for young people facing homelessness.

Join a group of our most committed supporters working all year long on behalf of young people experiencing homelessness. We welcome all youth without judgment or conditions, meeting their immediate basic needs of food, clothing, medical attention, and a safe place to sleep, at no cost. "We envision and work toward a world where every young person has a safe place to sleep and the love, respect, and support they need to build a future of their own." Your gift will help us continue to provide our youth with a safe place to sleep, clean clothes, food, and ultimately, a place to call home. Join a group of our most committed supporters working to end youth homelessness for good.

With volunteers, including friends, former students, and neighbors, he began an effort to help homeless and runaway young people. By 1970, Father Fitzgibbon had moved on to other ministries, but Father Ritter remained. Adrian Gately, Patricia Kennedy, and Paul Frazier joined him to create the Covenant Community. In 1972, Covenant House was officially incorporated with its first intake center established at 504 LaGuardia Place.

The causes of homelessness are complex, and many of the most vulnerable young people in our communities face the greatest risk. "Some of the youth advisors really connect with you. They helped me with my mental health a lot." "They provided me with immediate services and helped me to understand how to navigate my life. Before I was living in stress and fear." Give youth who are homeless a warm bed, a hot meal and a chance at a better future. The youth we serve are diverse, resilient and have dreams for a better future. Covenant House is the largest agency in Canada serving youth who are homeless, trafficked or at risk.

At the same time, we advocate for public policies that address the roots of the crisis, focusing on justice, safety, and opportunity. Sleep Out is your opportunity to spend a night outside and raise critical funds and awareness about the youth homelessness crisis. There are many ways to volunteer with Covenant House at a site near you, virtually, and on your own. Help us raise awareness, funds, and provide support to end youth homelessness for good.

Each year, an estimated 4.2 million young people in the United States experience a form of homelessness. Many different factors contribute to youth homelessness, but some of our most vulnerable populations face the greatest risk. We recognize the fundamental worth of every human being, and create a safe setting where all youth – regardless of life experience or identity – are served without judgement. Carolina Escobar Sarti, Ph.D., has been the national director of Covenant House Guatemala since 2010 and is devoted to the children and youth in our care there. Carolina is one of Guatemala’s most recognized poets, authors, and national newspaper columnists and she writes regularly on human rights issues. Guatemala’s president named Carolina the country’s ambassador for peace in 2011.

This year Covenant House California provided 83,329 nights of housing for young people experiencing homelessness in California. Our job training, education and life skills programs help young people transition to independence. Through it all, Covenant House is guided by the principles of offering every young person unconditional love and absolute respect. People of color experience homelessness at higher rates, largely due to long-standing structural racism that impacts education, housing, and other inequities.

Your gift today provides shelter and essential support services to young people facing homelessness. Covenant House is the largest, primarily privately funded charity in North and Central America providing immediate and long-term support for young people facing homelessness and survivors of trafficking. Our donors allow us to meet the emerging needs of our youth and accelerate our work. Our comprehensive youth-driven programming is centered on unconditional love, absolute respect and relentless engagement. For National Random Acts of Kindness Day, your act of kindness can truly help young lives! Every $1 of your generous gift becomes $4 worth of hot meals, safe shelter, urgent care and opportunities for homeless youth to build a life of self-reliance!

April 24, 2024 US university protests

waffle house index

The federal government uses many different methods to determine how severe a storm might be, some like Doppler radar from the National Weather Service are incredibly sophisticated. "In many cases, the Waffle Houses were one of those indicators." But the birth of the unusual storm indicator was not on purpose. Former FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate is the man behind the infamous Waffle House Index. He spoke to Newsweek on Thursday to tell the story of how a morning ritual and a casual observation turned into a nationwide indicator used by the government and millions of people to assess storm damage. One thing that shouldn’t be discounted is the support of sports teams, also part of the private sector—and important partners for us.

Negotiations at Columbia University unstable, organizers say

"The sooner restaurants, grocery and corner stores, or banks can re-open, the sooner local economies will start generating revenue again — signaling a strong recovery for that community." Its hurricane playbook explains how to reopen a restaurant and what to serve if there is gas but no electricity, or a generator but no ice. An important element is limiting the menu so the company's supply chain can focus on keeping certain items stocked and chilled or frozen. In May, the two Waffle Houses in Joplin, Mo., were among the few places to stay open after the deadliest tornado in six decades tore through the area.

Hay Fever Alert As Allergist Warns of 'Pollen Storm'

State officials and meteorologists joined Fugate to inspect the damage-stricken region in the days after Charley. The Waffle House chain does a significant amount of its business in the South, where a frequent amount of hurricanes can take place. The company says it has good risk management and disaster preparedness as a result. The iconic black-and-yellow Waffle House sign is visible on roads and highways all across the South to welcome diners 24/7. But severe weather can cause restaurants to limit service or close altogether, and this can be an indicator of how much damage a storm has caused. Of 200 restaurants that ended up in the storm’s path, just one, in inland North Carolina, gleamed red, for “still affected”; it had been flooded and needed cleaning out.

The company claims getting back to business restores a sense of normalcy in affected areas. Before a storm hits, the store brings in extra supplies and has managers on standby to help. Most of the 1,900 Waffle Houses are located in the southeast United States, meaning the company is used to battling big storms. There are a lot of ways the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assesses and addresses the severity of a natural disaster. Meteorology can predict movement patterns, wind gusts, and precipitation.

How sausages, eggs and waffles help American officials understand hurricane damage

In a recent academic paper, Panos Kouvelis, a business-school professor at Washington University in St. Louis, pegged Waffle House as one of the top four companies for disaster response, with Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Home Depot Inc. and Lowe’s Cos. Senior executives developed a manual for opening after a disaster, bulked up on portable generators, bought a mobile command center and gave employees key fobs with emergency contacts. “I hadn’t had a hot meal in two days, and I knew they’d be open,” said Nicole Gainey, a 22-year-old secretary for a truck-repair company who drove over for breakfast.

Waffle House index: 5 locations shuttered as Hurricane Idalia slams Florida

But the Waffle House, which spends almost nothing on advertising, has built a marketing strategy around the goodwill gained from being open when customers are most desperate. The driving factor behind the Waffle House Index is the restaurant’s philosophy to stay open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Waffle House has become a place for residents and first responders to often receive their first meal after a natural disaster, offering a fleeting moment of normalcy for those severely impacted. As those in Hurricane Florence's path begin to recover, the yellow glow of their local Waffle House could likely provide assurance there's a hot meal waiting for them just around the corner. So, Fugate and his crew drove south along the interstate until they came across a Waffle House that was open for business.

A photographer was among those arrested during clashes between protesters and law enforcement on the University of Texas at Austin campus on Wednesday. Work and classes will remain remote, and officials are considering keeping the campus closed for longer. The California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt campus will remain closed through the weekend as protesters, including "unidentified non-students," continue to occupy two buildings, school officials said in an update. House Speaker Mike Johnson called Wednesday for the resignation of the university’s president if she can't "bring order to this chaos." But preparation is a complicated endeavor in an economy where few things are sold in the places where they were made.

WTSP would like to send you push notifications about the latest news and weather.

waffle house index

After Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the surrounding area in 2005, Waffle House moved fast to bolster its post-disaster plans. Its hurricane playbook explains how to reopen a restaurant, what to serve if there is gas but no electricity, or a generator but no ice. Limiting the menu helps the company’s suppliers focus on keeping certain items stocked and chilled or frozen, depending on the conditions in the area. The storm team examines what worked and didn’t after every disaster, each time learning new lessons.

The local Waffle House was still open, and it's where Fugate and his crew headed to breakfast. The restaurant had found a way around the water pressure issue to remain open, unlike the various other businesses in the area. TAMPA, Fla. - More than 20 Waffle House restaurants from Bradenton to Naples are closed as severe weather from Hurricane Ian comes through. The storm made landfall just north of Fort Myers Wednesday afternoon.

First, as the storm made landfall, some locations of Waffle House — which boasts that every restaurant stays open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year — would probably have to close because of power loss or concerns for workers’ safety. And second, sometime after they did, someone would invoke the “Waffle House Index,” the slightly flippant measure of how bad a storm can get. "These companies have many stores in the southern part of the United States that are frequently exposed to hurricanes," Kouvelis says. For example, if a Waffle House store is open and offering a full menu, the index is green. Because Waffle House is well prepared for disasters, Kouvelis said, it’s rare for the index to hit red. For example, the Joplin, Mo., Waffle House survived the tornado and remained open.

While most places across the U.S. joke that things are about to get serious when meteorologist Jim Cantore shows up, our sign in the South is when area Waffle Houses announce that they’re boarding up. "We know how important it is for a community to start the recovery process as quickly as possible," Boss says. "The fact that the index is being used, we're proud that our name is attached to it." "Go down to the Waffle House, they're making coffee by pouring water in the coffee maker out of bottles of water. It kind of shows you the different philosophies," Fugate said.

"It is indeed marvelous. An irony-free zone where everything is beautiful and nothing hurts," Bourdain once said. The little things make differences now more than ever, as people look to put their lives back together after two separate catastrophic hurricanes. It’s more than just a cup of coffee, it’s more than just a Waffle House. It’s a little piece of normal—which can make all the difference. If you’re looking more for the getting-your-hands-dirty route, there are also options to volunteer with any of the organizations mentioned earlier—or even your own local food bank or pantry if you can’t travel. Many local groups have been putting together fundraisers or drives to help organizations making a difference in disaster-affected communities and working with the chapters on the ground to get exactly what is needed to the people in need.

Comic Book Layout: How to Use Panels, Gutters, Captions, & More!

comic book design

Start with just your first issue, and incorporate feedback from readers into the rest of your run. If there’s an unexpected fan favorite that people want to see more of, or a common critique, you can use that information to shape the rest of your series. Now you’ve got all your elements, it’s time to pull them together, and assemble your comic book. Arrange your final panels into their final flow, and give everything a final review. If the answer to any of these is no, you’ll want to go back and make revisions until you’re completely satisfied. The colors you choose for your comic book cover can pique interest as well as drawing attention to the design.

The important thing is that you feel comfortable and just brainstorm ideas. When you have a character and an idea of what you want to tell, it might be tempting to just dive in and start drawing. If you take extra care planning the story and the structure of the comic, you will avoid drawing yourself into a dead end. At this point, you should have a pretty good sense of what is happening and how the story is going to progress.

comic book design

Add Dialogue

When working on the layout, your goal is to keep the reader interested. One way to do this is to end each page (maybe not all, but some) with a cliffhanger. Let them know something interesting is about to happen, but don't reveal what that is until they turn the page.

Start with a storyboard

To do this, click on the “layout” button in the right hand menu. This is where you can add and delete cells, and add titles and descriptions if you would like. This will bring you to our state of the art, easy to use comic maker. Select the clipping mask with the Direct Selection Tool.

Above all, comic books are a visual medium, so try and keep dialogue short and sweet. Remember when Twitter only allowed 140 characters per Tweet? To set up the comic book cover template, you may need some graphic design skills to lay out these elements in a well-composed form. Once that's assessed, you can start putting together your thoughts for the cover design.

Now that you have your comic drawn (penciled), it's time for inking and coloring; two tasks that don't necessarily need to be done by the same person. Now we have a wavy vector path we can use as a clipping mask. From here we paste the frame border we made a copy of earlier, by pressing Command-F. This pastes the frame border on top of everything else and we have a finished panel. If I have many pages to lay out, it gives me a good overview.

How to Choose the Right Kind of Panels

Traditional layouts often use uniform, grid-like structures, providing clarity and a steady narrative pace. Unconventional layouts with varying panel sizes and shapes can emphasize action and urgency, guiding the reader’s eye in a specific sequence and highlighting key moments in the story. Were you can create a comic and graphic novel WITHOUT drawing. Click-n-drag comic book characters, scences into panels. After you’ve assembled everything and finalized the artwork, it’s time to get publishing. We have a whole post on this, which also covers how to print and market your comic book, but here are some quick tips.

Organizing panels: The gutter

Finalizing lettering will be the final step in the process, which we’ll discuss in the next step. Services like Webtoon and Tapas host comics that are designed to be read on the phone, where the images are sequenced vertically. All the reader has to do is swipe up to see the next panel. The trim size of modern comic books is 6.625 inches x 10.25 inches (or thereabouts). Most of the shelves in a comic store are for books this size, as are the clear plastic comic protectors that collectors use. Unless you have a truly revolutionary reason for printing a 9” x 9” title, you can save yourself a lot of hassle by sticking with a standard size.

These graphic story covers are the first thing to catch a potential buyer's eye and a reader's interest. For that reason, you need to make sure the cover design is engaging and attention grabbing, portraying the heroes' brand style and voice, and overall giving a clue to the story within. Break up longer speeches into shorter balloons to maintain visual appeal and readability. Thought bubbles can be used for internal monologues, while external dialogue is typically contained within speech bubbles.

Effective comic dialogue often uses concise, punchy sentences that capture a character’s personality and mood. Slang, accents, and unique speech quirks can differentiate characters and add realism. Comic book dialogue is critical for conveying your characters’ conversations, thoughts, and narrative information. Unlike prose, comic dialogue works in tandem with visuals, meaning they must be brief and impactful. Dialog must propel the story and convey the characters’ voices without overcrowding the art.

Follow me and let's learn some necessary basics to designing a good comic cover that stands out from the rest. Also, check out CWS Bookstore, where you can sell digital and printed versions of your comics without worrying about printing and order fulfillment. Contact Comix Well Spring to find out more about our services and for resources on how to create a comic book. Sometimes, what’s unsaid can be as powerful as spoken words, allowing the artwork to carry the narrative. Creating a profile for each person is an excellent way to start building your characters.

When selecting your color palette, make sure it reflects the mood you want to create. Creative lettering can also be used to represent different characters’ voices. Unique fonts or colors for certain characters can help readers instantly recognize who is speaking, adding to character development. In Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples, the characteristic fonts and speech bubble designs for different species underline the diversity of its universe.

Monthly payment plan at adobe.com makes sure you always have the latest version. Luckily, social media sites like Facebook and Twitter make this relatively easy. Your best best is to create a daily post telling everyone about your new venture. Just don't be a pest; don't flood their feed with your sales pitch. In addition to proper color selection, not keeping your colours consistent can break things too.

Panel layout in comic books is a critical element that dictates the flow and rhythm of the narrative. The arrangement and size of panels on a page, along with the space between them, known as gutters, influence the pacing and focus of the story. Using sound effects throughout your comic helps emphasize events, actions, and sounds happening within the scene. They are a powerful element that can help your reader visualize, feel, or hear what's happening in the comic book, making it more realistic. As much as the old saying suggests otherwise, people really do judge a book by its cover — and especially a comic book.

Comic book design is an adventure in storytelling and artistic expression. At its core, this creative process combines various elements of a comic book, including panels, dialogue, colors, and lettering, to create a captivating narrative. Once you have a winner, choose a title font to fit your comic book. Just as the title and cover image need to work together to create the same mood, the cover font should match the interior font style. Keep the lettering style simple and legible, and avoid adding too many colors, special effects, or shadowing, which can be distracting. Creating a comic book usually happens from the inside out, making cover design the last step of the process.

Waffle House index: 5 Florida locations closed due to Hurricane Idalia

waffle house index

During Hurricane Irene, Waffle House lost power to 22 restaurants in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. By Wednesday evening, all but one in hard-hit coastal Virginia were back in business. Waffle House Inc. has 1,600 restaurants stretching from the mid-Atlantic to Florida and across the Gulf Coast, leaving it particularly vulnerable to hurricanes. Other businesses, of course, strive to reopen as quickly as possible after disasters.

How Waffle House Helps Measure the Severity of a Natural Disaster

One video posted on social media shows a fight between multiple people, one appearing to be one of the victims. While it’s not clear what the fight was about, we know gunshots rang out after. The university closed its campus Wednesday evening as LAPD began arresting demonstrators. Waffle House has also garnered a reputation for being a hotbed of absolute insanity. "There are two signs you need to leave now. Waffle House is closed, and (Jim) Cantore shows up," one X user posted on the social media platform, formerly known as Twitter. The index has been used to predict how severely weather will affect an area's accessibility to food, water and essential resources.

Waffle House has over 2,000 locations in the U.S., including more than 100 in Florida. FEMA does pay attention to their closures, as it helps them indicate how many people have evacuated from a town. That knowledge helps FEMA decide what they need to do after the storm.

Hay Fever Alert As Allergist Warns of 'Pollen Storm'

On top of that, the then newly-reorganized agency's widely-criticized, delayed response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 left many with the impression FEMA was a bumbling (and at worst, carelessly lethal) example of federal inefficiency. In a interview with NBC News on Thursday, Fugate acknowledged that the index "doesn't tell you everything." But he says restaurants labeled red are still a "pretty good gauge" of which areas of a community are impacted the most and need critical attention first. When he was leaving the restaurant, Fugate and his team noticed several cars appeared to be parked at the Starbucks about a block away. But when they got closer, they realized the people weren't there for the coffee.

FRESH FROM HELL, HILARITY I’m usually up round about the 8 o’clock hour. It’s a longstanding daddy-daughter tradition, always from the smoothie/juice spot right here on my block, Fresh From Hell. If I worked late and am feeling super lazy, I might have it delivered. Other times, I walk down the block in my pajama pants and pick it up. She gets a fresh and fruity açaí bowl; I get a green smoothie with a bunch of stuff in it — flax seeds, matcha protein, ginger, blueberries. The new restaurant is over 4500 square feet with parking, a feat that is hard to come by in this area.

Cloudy skies move out later in the day as winds shift

If a store like a Home Depot or a Lowe’s or your local hardware store can open, that means people can get the supplies they need in order to rebuild, to clean up the muck and progress along the path to recovery. Businesses in communities are often some of the biggest drivers of recovery. If people can go back to work, they can return to at least one piece of a normal life—and that little piece of normalcy can make a big difference. DAD HAT As of late we’ve been walking to the piers, two blocks away. If it’s raining, she likes to jump in the puddles, much to the chagrin of me in my father hat. When we get back home late morning, we do what I like to think of as the real breakfast, which is delivery from Galaxy Diner.

The Waffle House Index is looked at along with more formal measures of storm severity, such as the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed. The Waffle House Index is an informal way of measuring the severity of a hurricane. Idalia is the eighth major hurricane to make landfall along the Gulf Coast since 2017. But when the agency needs an accurate, ground-level gauge for how a community is coping during a crisis, they turn to Waffle House.

After a hurricane, the 24/7 restaurant provides one measure of how infrastructure and supply chains are holding up.

The restaurant chain’s preparedness for natural disasters, which allows its locations to stay open throughout weather crises or open shortly after, has earned it a storm distinction with FEMA. Waffle House restaurants have a reputation for staying open during extreme weather — and for reopening quickly after being forced to close due to tornadoes and hurricanes. If you've lived in Florida for a while, you've probably heard of the "Waffle House Index," which is an informal metric used by emergency officials to measure the severity of a storm. "The Waffle House test just doesn't tell us how quickly a business might rebound — it also tells how the larger community is faring," said a FEMA blog post from 2011, when Craig Fugate was administrator under former president Obama.

“I looked at not only the individual who shot the video but looking at the people in there, those employees, and how they seemed to just be so devastated, overwhelmed,” Dr. James Camm One Community One Voice said. The university "supports free speech through open dialogue that is respectful and constructive," the officials said. "The university is a private campus and the group had been violating some of their orders. It was a trespass at that point and we assisted with the arrests," Los Angeles Police Captain Kelly Muniz said during a briefing. No matter the reason, Waffle House has developed a cult following. Across its more than 2,100 restaurants in 25 states, Waffle House typically sees annual revenues exceeding $1.3 billion. Beloved for its delicious, cheap food and healthy doses of complete chaos, Waffle House holds a unique place in the hearts (and stomachs) of many Americans.

In March 2020, the Waffle House Index went red as restaurants around the U.S. closed during the early weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic. Waffle House closed 21 locations across the state from Naples along the Gulf of Mexico north some 120 miles to Bradenton in Manatee County as a precaution before closing an additional 14 stores. The Waffle House Index is considered accurate in part because it isn’t used to measure specifics but rather to gauge a storm’s impact on a community. What helps its accuracy here is the volume of stores — there are hundreds scattered across the Southeast.

However, the restaurant really has become shorthand at the highest levels of the American government for predicting how bad a disaster will be, or how much damage a disaster has done to a community. The "Waffle House Index," first coined by Federal Emergency Management Agency Director W. Craig Fugate, is based on the extent of operations and service at the restaurant following a storm and indicates how prepared a business is in case of a natural disaster. For FEMA, the ability to order a plate of smothered and covered hash browns is an important analytic. If a Waffle House is having trouble getting stock, then transportation has been interrupted. If the menu is limited, then it’s possible they have some utilities but not others. If its locations have locked their doors, inclement weather has taken over.

waffle house index

The popular 24/7 restaurant chain specializing in waffles and other breakfast food rarely closes it doors, often providing food and resources to first responders during natural disasters. The index is green when the local Waffle House is open and serving its full menu; yellow when it's open, but serving a limited menu; and red when it's closed. Those levels then indicate the extent to which a community has power and water. Green means the restaurant is serving a full menu, a signal that damage in an area is limited and the lights are on. Yellow means a limited menu, indicating power from a generator, at best, and low food supplies. Red means the restaurant is closed, a sign of severe damage in the area or unsafe conditions.

In Hurricane Katrina — when they closed 107 locations in Mississippi and on the north shore of Lake Ponchartrain — roads were so bad they stashed supplies in a refrigerated semi-trailer with armed guards, and fuel so scarce they brought in their own tank trucks. When Katrina struck in 2005, Twitter had not yet launched; now Bruner uses it not just to alert customers to closings, but to crowdsource whether roads are open and where the power is on. Waffle House announced Oct. 6 that it was pre-emptively closing some restaurants on a 90-mile stretch of Interstate 95 between Fort Pierce and Titusville in Florida.

The Marshall House Review: What To REALLY Expect If You Stay

marshall house savannah

The Marshall House is the oldest operating hotel in Savannah and has an authentic atmosphere that's not to be missed. Built in 1851, the hotel was occupied by Union troops led by General Sherman at the end of the Civil War, and was a hospital during two Yellow Fever epidemics. Savannah's charming Historic District is filled with numerous parks and well-kept, architecturally-stunning historic buildings. Guests are required to show a photo identification and credit card upon check-in. Please note that all Special Requests are subject to availability and additional charges may apply. Couples particularly like the location — they rated it 9.7 for a two-person trip.

Some guests have reported seeing friendly ghosts at the Marshall House. Our star system does not denote hotel amenities but it does denote the level of our approval. A place with one star is worth a look—after all, it made the list. A rating of two stars means it's excellent, and three stars is the highest praise we give.

Unique Rooms & Suites

In response to the coronavirus (COVID-19), additional safety and sanitation measures are in effect at this property. Guests under 21 years old can only check in with a parent or official guardian. This hotel was highly-rated for its very comfy beds.

We liked the spacious one bedroom suite with view to an internal court where breakfast was served. Classical ambience with luxury details. Historic hotel with good and comfortble reception. Bottles of water, coffee and tea were complimentary, as well as a drink every evening. Central location and historical significance. Loved the wine and cheese evenings with quiz or live music.

The Marshall House’s original owner was a prominent Savannah woman. Mary M. Marshall opened the original Marshall House in 1851, and she was known as an incredibly successful businesswoman in Savannah’s elite financial and social circles. Today, there’s an 1830s portrait of Mary in the reception area welcoming guests to her hotel. On the hotel's third floor, you'll find a collection of historic artifacts from the original Marshall House.

It's old and charming and that's really all I need. The rooms are great, clean and homey. It's got a good location near all ... Location is fantastic, which is the only reason I would recommend this hotel. The guest rooms are extremely small for 2 people to not be on top of eachother and in each other’s way.

A $40 per room/per-day Amenity Fee will be added to the daily room rate. This fee allows guests to enjoy the amenities and services below without miscellaneous charges. The Marshall House is located in the very center of the Historic District.

Guest can expect their hotel to be one of the stops on some of the ghost tours that travel around Savannah's multiple ghostly stops. If you're looking for a hotel that is haunted, without the extremely haunted feel and look, this is the place. One could easily book this hotel without their family members realizing it's haunted.

Amazing hotel, excellent location in Savannah. This place was walking distance to almost every place we wanted to go, including the riverwalk and many ... And Wayne who leads trivia Night as well as other functions is great and always available for recommendations for restaurants and things to see around Savannah. It was great staying here learning the history of this hotel.

These rooms are located along the inside corridor of The Marshall House with convenient elevator access. This round, the course conditions were excellent and we had a great day. The course is part of a multi-course complex in The Landings. The development has over 4000 homes so there are plenty of golfers out and about. Staff assisted with printing out boarding pass. This aging gem was opened in 1851 by enterprising innkeeper Mary Marshall, making it the city’s oldest hotel. In the Civil War it served as a hospital, while Joel Chandler Harris, author of the famous “Uncle Remus” stories (of Br’er Rabbit and company), lived here in the late 1860s. If you can afford it, the Broughton Balcony Rooms are the best in the hotel and a real treat, opening out onto the spacious, wrought-iron veranda. Surrounded by restaurants and shopping, short walk to City Market and Riverwalk. I like the idea of staying in a historical bldg, and I would’ve loved to hear the history of it.

I've stayed here several times and it's always pleasant and clean. The breakfast is always phenomenal and no other hotel compares. The Marshall House in Savannah is known for its gorgeous architecture, stunning wrought iron, romantic atmosphere and elegant rooms that overlook popular Broughton Street. But there’s way more to The Marshall House than its beauty! Check out these fun facts that make The Marshall House a sought-after destination for history lovers.

Property highlights

Plesant stay at a nice central hotel. No free parking but some options around. Everything you need in the Room only downside is you hear as people Talk in the walkway ... With a prime location on Broughton Street, you'll be near everything you want to see and do.

The fine printMust-know information for guests at this property

The hotel was beautiful and very clean. The nightly wine and cheese hours with entertainment were terrific. We liked the fact that there was always complimentary cold bottles of water and a coffee and tea station in the lobby. Built in 1851, this charming 68-room property housed Union soldiers during the Civil War -- and some guests say their spirits still walk the hallways. However, this upper-middle-range property has some of the drawbacks common to old buildings, such as noise issues, small rooms and bathrooms, and few amenities.

Haunted Hotels Where You Can Rest in Peace

There's shopping and dining right outside our door, and beautiful squares and antebellum architecture at every turn. Most guests do not need their car until it's time to leave. Don’t miss the 45 Bistro, which offers a seasonal menu and an extensive wine list. We loved the daily free musical entertainment and happy hour. There was lots of choice and no limits on quantity. The staff were friendly and accommodating.

There’s a small museum inside the hotel. We're staying at the Marshall house right now. Specially, Dona and our new favorite Cary this will be the second time I booked From ... The Historic District is bordered by the Savannah River and Forsyth Park, and includes the Riverfront and City Market areas. Riverfront is a (somewhat) recently revitalized area, with restaurants, galleries, shops, and bars.

Saw tour groups stopping and talking about it across the street but no info was offered to the actual guests of the hotel, which I thought was odd! Guest services is great and so helpful. I recommend packing cubes for most travel, but I find them a near imperative for travel on the Disney Wish. The primary stateroom storage on the Wish takes the form of shelves rather than drawers. It’s much easier to keep track of items when they’re contained in a packing cube rather than loose on a shelf.

If you need sound to fall asleep, such as a podcast, or even white noise, do everyone a favor and invest headphones that are comfortable enough to wear as you drift into sleepyland. If you can’t sleep with something on your head, a SleepBar can be another helpful option. You should be able to take photos of your underwater snorkeling finds with your phone inside a waterproof case, but I’ve never been able to get good shots through a case’s thick plastic. You’ll have better luck with something like a disposable underwater camera for kids or with a waterproof Go-Pro for adults. Keep everyone’s feet safe while you explore the beach by investing in quality water shoes. Keep all your paperwork in one safe spot with a family passport holder.

Your TouringPlans.com subscription helps us to help you by funding new articles and research. Have you gotten (or given) a cruise-related gift that you absolutely loved? Most Disney cruises have a pirate night or some other themed evening. A pirate eye patch or vest can help get the costume planning started.

Passionate cruisers have been known to invest significant time or significant money on sites like Etsy to create elaborate personalized magnets. For this reason, my magnets of choice are versions of Magnetic Poetry. It’s a hoot to come back to your room and find cute messages left by other guests. Great choices for cruises in the islands is the Pirate Magnetic Poetry kit or the Beach Magnetic Poetry kit. There is  also a Christmas version and an Edgar Allen Poe version that might be fun if you’re sailing on a Halloween cruise. Just be aware of what words you’re displaying as you put them on your door.

DCL provides towels on the ship and on its private islands, so you don’t have to bring those with you. A few sets of towel clips or towel bands can help keep your towels in place while you’re off getting another serving of chicken nuggets. Our mission is to help you save time and money on your vacation.

If you want to give an assortment of products, check out one of my favorite travel shopping sites minimus.biz, where you can find single-serve packages of toiletries, snacks, baby care items, over-the-counter medications, and more. If you need additional help planning a cruise vacation, don’t hesitate to call upon the expert planning team at Touring Plans Travel. There are plenty of free soft drinks available on the ships’ pool decks, but that’s not much help if you’re watching a three-hour movie six decks below. My favorite is the colossal Stanley mug, but there are numerous other brands and sizes. Waterproof phone cases are inexpensive, but they can be tricky to seal properly.

Not everyone feels ill-effects from ocean travel, but even mild seasickness can quickly derail an otherwise lovely vacation. Head trouble off at the pass with motion-sickness remediation such as SeaBands, motion sickness glasses, or good old-fashioned Dramamine. Speak to a medical professional if you have serious concerns about this issue. DCL gives lanyards as a gift to Silver level and higher Castaway Club members. They’re by no means necessary, but some first-time cruisers like to have them on hand. Ship staterooms are small and any noise will inevitably be heard by everyone in the room.

At Disney, PG13 language is about as racy and you want to get. The sun and wind of ocean travel can be hard on anyone’s skin. While sunscreen is available in the shipboard shops, Coppertone is likely the only brand you’ll find.

Binoculars can be a great tool for anyone who wants to scan the ocean for other vessels or for wildlife such as whales and dolphins. Binoculars can be particularly useful in sailings in Alaska (to better see glacier features) and the Norwegian fjords where animals are sometimes visible onshore. Most cast members will allow you to slide with a Go-Pro attached to your body with a harness.

Unlike a frenetic Disney theme park vacation, a cruise vacation can be much more focused on relaxation – kicking back with a good book by the pool or on the beach. Since the pandemic, DCL has not carried reading material in its gift shops. With an e-reader like the Kindle, you can bring a complete series of beach-reads with you on vacation with no worries that you’ll run out of books. Make sure to download all your Bridgertons before you embark the ship because onboard WiFi can be expensive. Stateroom doors on Disney Cruise Line are made of metal, which makes them a great surface for displaying magnets.
